Supercharged!

Many science educators advocate conceptual or qualitative physics, the notion that physics is best taught not by mathematical formulae, but rather through experiments, labs, demonstrations, and visualizations which help students understand physical phenomena conceptually. Consistent with the Physics First curricular movement, this perspective maintains that a deep, fundamental understanding of physics provides a solid basis for future science learning. How to engage younger students in complex physics thinking is a challenge, but computer simulations provide one intriguing way to engage students in the study of abstract, complex physical phenomena. Digital technologies can immerse the learner in worlds that not only represent scientific phenomena, but behave according to the rules of physics. Simulated worlds can be programmed to behave by Newtonian or Maxwellian rules. By representing the simulation through digital gaming conventions, educators can potentially increase engagement while also fostering deeper learning, as learners engage in critical and recursive game play, whereby they generate hypotheses about the game system, develop plans and strategies, observe their results and adjust their hypotheses about the game system. Experiences in game worlds become experiences that students can draw upon in thinking about scientific worlds, using their intuitive understandings developed in simulated worlds to interpret physics problems. By representing complex scientific content through tangible, experienced nontextually-mediated representations, simulated worlds may also engage reluctant learners in the study of science.

It was under these principles that Supercharged! was designed and built. The game places students in a three dimensional enviroment where they must navigate a spaceship by controlling the electric charge of the ship, placing charged particles around the space. Students must carefully plan their trajectory through each level by tracing the field lines that emmanate from charged objects, and in the process of doing so, develop a more hands on understanding of how charged particles interact.

Is this math related game?

Interesting concept, but charged particles interact in accordance to certain formula and physics principals? Or is this a random path generated by computer to simulate particle reactions?

Sounds like an amazing project. A lot of people have difficulties learning by the "book" and this can really really help in this!

I could probably spend the rest of my life exploring the wonderful places that the links on this site lead to. It is a homeschooling website, but don't let that stop you. Anyone with kids will find lots to check out. I think teachers can find a lot here. And anyone who doesn't have kids, but who like me has more curiosity than a cat will love this site as well.

It's sad how a role of play and fun is neglected in modern education. Games and visual aids are especially helpful in explaining difficult concepts, and I try to use as much of them as possible during physics and maths lessons, so far the results have always beem amazing.

Fantastic!

I love the idea of catering your games around educating students. For me personally, I struggled with learning physics in high school and I most certainly would have appreciated a game like this. Great Work!!

Yes, children hate school. Yes, they love games. But what is truly offered through the commercial off the shelf games, is pretty miserable. I limited the amount that my children viewed and tried to steer clear of the violent ones.

As an educator, however, and am interested in incorporating educational games into a early childhood setting, do so within the confines of the state regulations, would be difficult.

If I were able to alot the time, I would definitely take a closer look at Line Rider and Light Bot, as well as what LOGO has to offer. As they appear simple enough to use even for the youngest of student.

This was an informative session and I will make the effort to connect to a live one soon. I had a few questions to ask and being able to speak to the author of this session, would have been beneficial to me.

Supercharged sounds like a great game. It seems very cool that you are able to control a spaceship with an electric charge. This should help out people in physics classes around the world.

Sure, there is some good educational stuff for children. If you want peak mental performance, then play this. I really wish there was more variety to it.

with interesting new game

with interesting new game mechanics, and these games frequently beat out competition from large studios with long standing franchises. Nowhere was this more apparent than in the "game of the year" category, in which Portal, a short puzzle game in bedroom furniture which you use a personal wormhole generator to escape a prison-like lab, beat out favorites like Super Mario Galaxy and Rock Band.

Love this educational game

This is a great educational game. I have viewed many of your other games and high school achievement program lessons and like them all! I think you should create a new game that help inspire youth to get their GED online studying or high school diploma. I do like though that you've integrated students as the primary focus of your educational games. That is a great tactic and what makes your site so special.
